About:

The mining of limestone at Marmor, between Gladstone and and Rockhampton in Central Queensland, was established to supply lime to Mount Morgan early in the 19th century. At that time it was regarded as a reasonably large enterprose employing up to 150 men. The workers were housed in canvas walled 'houses' with wooden frames and iron roofs. In its early days the Marmor limestone mine was serviced by the North Coast railway line but this has been replaced by road transport in is later years of operation.

Marmor Limestone Mine is Owned by International Company Sibelco

The Marmor limestone mine is today owned by international minerals company Sibelco. Sibelco itself was founded in 1882 in Belgium, Europe. It manufactures a wide range of mineral products for local and international markets. Today Sibelco is one of the world's largest privately owned multinational companies.

Marmor Limestone Operation Located 40 Kilometres From Rockhampton

The Marmor limestone mine, that is located about 40 kilometres south of Rockhampton, also has its own limestone kiln and processing plant. Sibelco markets its Marmor limestone as Sibelco Aglime, a major source of calcium and an essential nutrient in many agricultural applications, especially in the correction of soil acidification. Aglime is also widely used in industry in the reduction of acidity occurring at low pH levels in the processing of manganese and aluminum. Aglime has an important use in the obtaining of livestock health. This is obtained through improved fertiliser efficiencies and the way aglime influences soil micro-organisms. Aglime is essential in balancing nutrients in the soil and in the improving of legume nitrogen fixation as it promites worm activity and therefore improves the structure of the soil through promoting organic matter decay.

Sibelco Produces raw Materials for Manufacturers Around the World

Sibelco, as well as in its production of limestone products from its Marmor limestone mine, creates products that form the basic building blocks for many of the things we use daily, ranging from your coffee cup to the windows of your home, down to computer parts. Most people don't give the matter a lot of thought but most of the things we use matter of factly each day originated as minerals under the ground. Sibelco mines these minerals, processes the ore and delivers the raw material to manufacturers that allows them to produce your everyday goods.

Marmor Aglime Distributed Throughout Australia, New Zealand and Asia

Sibelco processes and supplies aglime from the Marmor limestone mine to its customers throughout Australia and New Zealand, as well as Asia, as part of the Sibelco Group, one of the largest industrial mineral companies in the world.

Sibelco commenced its Australian and Zew Zealand involvement in 2000 and since that time has expanded its business to now employ over 934 people working in more than 45 mines (including the Marmor limestone mine) processing plants, warehouses and sales offices. Its oldest acquisition that has a longer history than any other is at Lilydale in Victoria that has been in continuous production for more that 130 years. Sibelco today supplies products to industrial, manufacturing, construction, agriculture, mining and glass industries. The historic Marmor limestone open cut mine contributes to this success today just as it had to Mount Morgan in its earlier days.
