About: Marchinbar Island is located off the northern-most part of the Northern Territory. There is a mineral exploration licence, held by Gulf Alumina, that covers an area of 320 square kilometres, almost the whole of Marchinbar Island. Marchinbar Island is situated near the large bauxite deposit at Gove that has been mined by Rio Tinto Alcan for many years.

Exploratory Drilling of the Bauxite Deposit on Marchinbar Island Began in the 1950's

Exploratory drilling of the bauxite deposit on Marchinbar Island, that was initially started in the early 1950's by the Australian Aluminium Commission, identified a bauxite resource of 9.9 million tonnes containing an average thickness of 2.4 metres with actual thicknesses varying between seven metres and half a metre. Marchinbar Island bauxite has an alumina grading of between 48 and 53 percent with an average alumina grading of 46 percent. Marchinbar Island bauxite has a low reactive silica content that ranges from three to six percent. This suggests there probably won't be a need for beneficiation. Marchinbar Island is a quite narrow island, therefore despite it being located in a very remote region it will support the removal of bauxite by shiploaders quite cheaply and readily.

Marchinbar Island Traditional Owners Vetoed Bauxite Development on the Island in 2007

Negotiations to develop bauxite on Marchinbar Island became intense in 2007 when issues regarding environmental and heritage protection were raised, with the result leading to the traditional owners of the island not giving their support to the project that was needed before serious mining on the island could be considered. This led to the Northern Territory administration imposing a five year moratorium on the project. During this time all further exploration on the island was unable to proceed.

Gulf Alumina now Undertaking new Negotiations on Developing Marchinbar Island Bauxite Deposit

Gulf Alumina is currently undertaking negotiations to secure mining contract services that would develop a bauxite mine on Marchinbar Island along with the carrying out of civil engineering works and arranging barging services on the river along with the appointment of an EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contractor.

Gulf Alumina Limited is an Australian based bauxite mining company developing bauxite mines for export supplying bauxite to a growing international alumina refinery market, particularly in China. In 2008, the company secured investment from a major Chinese aluminium company, Shandong Nanshan Aluminium Company Limited, from the Shandong Province, in China. Shandong Nanshan Aluminium Company has acquired a 20 percent shareholding in Gulf Alumina.

Marchinbar Island Coins Originated in Tanzania 900 Years ago

Development of bauxite mining on Marchinbar Island is particularly interesting in that it is the island where ancient coins were found on the beach during World War Two by an Australian air force serviceman, Morry Isenberg. The coins, that are now housed at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, were identified to have come from a medieval African sultanate, the Kilwa sultanate,in Tanzania, about 900 years previously. The coins are by far the oldest foreign made items ever found in Australia.
