About:

The Laverton North Steel mill, located south east of Melbourne in Victoria, was established in the 1980's by the Smorgon family. The chairman of the company was Graham Smorgon. At the time Smorgon Steel was attempting to compete with the fast growing BHP Steel. The Smorgon Steel mill in Victoria was not built as a primary steel manufacturing facility, it was rather a mill that recycled scrap steel and turned it into steel reinforcement bars for the concrete construction industry. The steel produced at the Laverton North steel mill was entirely produced by re- smelting scrap iron and steel in an electric arc furnace.

Smorgan Steel Merged with BHP Billiton to Create OneSteel That Closed the Laverton North Steel Mill in 2008
Smorgan Steel merged with BHP Billiton subsidiary company OneSteel in 2007, a transaction that took a year to complete as the Australian anti- monopoly regulator, the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) was afraid the merger would result in two significant Australian steel businesses becoming a monopoly. The following year, 2008, it was announced the Laverton North mill would be closed. The premises is still used by OneSteel Recycling as a collection centre for ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals be it industrial, commercial or domestic.

OneSteel Changed its Name to Arrium Limited in 2012
OneSteel was formed as a subsidiary company of BHP Billiton in 2000 when at that time it was primarily focused on manufacturing and distributing steel products. It is now a substantial company that has considerable interests in the mining and mining consumables industries, as well as its steel and recycling businesses. In 2012 OneSteel changed its name to Arrium Limited.

Laverton North Operation Inherited by Smorgon ARC

The Laverton North operation became involved in several take-over bids since the 1980's and a particularly interesting period occurred with another parallel growing company, ARC (Australian Reinforcement Company.) In 1982 ARC was acquired by Humes Limited, a national concrete pipe manufacturer. In 1988 Humes was acquired by Smorgon Consolidated Industries. As a result of this take-over ARC became known as Smorgon ARC and gained access to the Smorgan Steel mill at Laverton North.

ARC Acquire Laverton North Steel Business

After the company received public listing on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) the entire Smorgon steel businesses were consolidated into the Smorgon Steel Group. The Smorgon Group merged with BHP Billiton company OneSteel (Arrium) in 2007. In 2008 Smorgan Steel Reinforcing was re-branded as the Australian Reinforcing Company (ARC.) ARC is now a stand-alone reinforcing company, the name paying homage to the company's heritage that dates back to 1920 when it was Australia's first steel fencing and reinforcing company.

ARC today is one of Australia's leading manufacturers and suppliers of steel reinforcement and fencing products. It has manufacturing facilities in various parts of Australia that are supported by a wide network of service outlets in both regional and metropolitan areas.

ARC employs more than 930 people in 40 locations around the country and its five manufacturing sites are currently producing 400,000 tonnes of steel each year.
