About: The Keysbrook Mineral Sands Project is based on mining a major leucoxene deposit situated 70 kilometres south of Perth, near the towns of North Dandalup and Keysbrook, in Western Australia. When it becomes productive, in late 2015, it will be one of the world's largest leucoxene mining operations.

Keysbrook Project Being Developed by MZI Resources

The Keysbrook mineral sands project is being developed by MZI Resources ( Matilda Zircon Resources) through its wholly owned subsidiary Keysbrook Leucoxene Pty Ltd (KLPL). The sand mine will be primarily focused on producing zircon, rutile and leucoxene heavy minerals for the Chinese and the USA markets.

Keysbrook Heavy Minerals Concentrate to be Processed at Doral's Picton Plant

The Keysbrook mineral sands project involves the development of an open pit sand mine and a primary processing facility. The heavy mineral concentrate recovered from the Keysbrook mineral sands project will be taken by road transport, via the South West Highway, to the Doral mineral sands separation plant at Picton, 120 kilometres to the south, where it will be separated into leucoxene and zircon concentrate in readiness for export through the port at Bunbury. The project is expected to produce around 96,000 tonnes of heavy mineral sands a year comprising, 29,000 tonnes a year of zircon concentrate, 38,400 tonnes a year of L88 (88 percent titanium dioxide) and 28,800 tonnes a year of L70 (70 percent titanium dioxide) and 11 percent other minerals.

Keysbrook Deposit Covers an Area of 1,406 Hectares

It is planned to mine 4.5 million tonnes of ore a year at the Keysbrook project to an average depth of about 2.2 metres, making it a very low cost mining operation. The land surrounding the project area is mainly pastoral and raises both beef and dairy cattle. It also consists of some areas that have suffered from the degrading of native vegetation. The heavy mineral ore deposit at Keysbrook is dunal, it has no overburden and very little clay or rock content. The deposit covers an area of 1,406 hectares in total with the mineral leucoxene its main constituent.

GR Engineering Services win Contract to Construct Keysbrook Project

MZI Resources have appointed GR Engineering Services to carry out the construction of the Keysbrook mineral sands project. The first work undertaken has been the construction of an access road, this is to be followed with the undertaking of earthworks at the project site. The heavy minerals concentrator is also to be constructed on site along with all the other mining infrastructure requirements. It is expected that production will commence during the December quarter of 2015.

GR Engineering Services have also commenced work at the Doral Mineral Sands Pty Ltd owned Picton mineral separation plant, in the carrying out of the necessary expansion and upgrading work, that is needed to accommodate the extra throughput that will be occasioned from the additional Keysbrook production when it starts up later in the year.

Once production commences the Keysbrook mineral sands project will be a seven day a week 24 hour a day mining operation. It will use an excavator and articulated dump trucks at the mine site.
