The Gorgon Gas Project is located on Barrow Island about 60 kilometres off the north west Western Australian coast within the Greater Gorgon area. It is developing the Jansz-lo and Gorgon gas fields. The project is one of the world's biggest natural gas projects and the largest single resource development ever undertaken in the history of Australia.

Chevron has the Largest Share Holding in the Gorgon Gas Project
The Gorgon Gas Project is being undertaken by international company Chevron through its fully owned subsidiary, Chevron Australia Pty Ltd that holds a 47.3 percent interest in the project alongside ExxonMobil with 25 percent, Shell 25 percent, Osaka Gas 1.25 percent, Tokyo Gas one percent and Chubu Electric Power 0.417 percent. The Australian Government has committed $60 million to the construction of the Gorgon Carbon Dioxide Injection Project as part of its Low Emission Technology Demonstration Fund.

Gorgon Gas Project Expected to Start Production in 2015
The Gorgon Gas Project includes the construction of a three train, 15.6 million tonnes a year liquified natural gas (LNG) plant, as well as a domestic gas facility that has a capacity to produce 300 terajoules of gas every day to service the Western Australian domestic market. The first export load of liquified natural gas is expected to leave Barrow Island in early 2015 along with the first domestic supply. The LNG produced as part of the Gorgon Gas project will be off loaded by means of a 2.1 kilometre long loading jetty. Domestic gas will be piped to the mainland.

Gorgon Gas Project Workers Accommodated on Barrow Island
The Gorgon Gas Project construction workforce works and lives on Barrow Island which is an A Class nature reserve with international recognition. The workers are flown on and off the island to complete their shifts and are housed in modern on-site accommodation while on duty. The accommodation consists of a single air conditioned room with ensuite facilities. The rooms are fully serviced with a full linen change. They are also equipped with television sets that have both cable and free-to-air programs available.

Much of the construction work is undertaken by various construction companies that work differing shifts depending on the type of work being undertaken, although most work for 10 hours a day with a half day off every second Sunday.

The Gorgon Gas Project includes the following:
A domestic pipeline that takes the gas 90 kilometres from Barrow Island to the Western Australian mainland where it integrates with the existing Dampier to Bunbury natural gas pipeline
Pipelines that cross Barrow Island from the east to the west coast where they are linked to the various gas treatment plants
A sea bed gas gathering system and underwater pipelines that deliver the gas from the Jansz-lo and Gorgon gas wells, located from between 130 and 65 kilometres respectively, from Barriow Island, to the treatment plants on the island
The drilling of ten high rate big bore development wells at the Jansz-lo gas field and eight at the Gorgon field.

Chevron, as a company, was initially established in 1879 when it was known as the Pacific Coast Oil Company. Since that time there have been several name changes. For a period it was known as the Standard Oil Company of California. It became known as Chevron when the company acquired the Gulf Oil Corporation in 1984. In 2001 Chevron merged with the Texas Fuel Company more latterly known as Texaco. In 2005 it acquired Unocal Corporation.

Chevron dates back to 1952 when the company came to WA through Caltex (then owned by Texaco-later to become Chevron). Projects followed in the 1960's when Chevron joined Woodside and Shell in a joint venture and became Noerth West Shelf Venture, discovering oil on Barrow Island and gas at more
