About: The China Stone coal mining project is a large scale greenfield coal mining operation located 300 kilometres west of Mackay and 270 kilometres south of Townsville, at the northern reaches of the Galilee Basin in northern Queensland.

The China Stone Project is Based on the Yarrowmere North Coal Mining Permit

The China Stone project is owned by Macmines Austasia Pty Ltd, a mining company founded in Queensland in1999. Macmines Austasia Pty Ltd acquired the Yarrowmere North coal mining exploration permit from the Queensland Governmenr Natural Resources and Mines Department in 2005. Chinese company, Shanxi Meijin Energy Group, acquired 100 percent of Macmines Austasia in 2007.

EIS for China Stone Mine Being Prepared by Hansen Bailey

Macmines Austasia is currently in the process of submitting an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) regarding the China Stone project as it seeks approval to begin construction work at the site. The EIS is being prepared by specialist environmental consulting company, Hansen Bailey. The EIS will include the results of consultations with stakeholders who have interests in the progression of the project.

China Stone Project Located in Remote Area of Queensland

The China Stone coal mining project is located in a remote area of Queensland. The closest town being Charters Towers, which is 285 kilometres to its north by road. A smaller town, Clermont, is located 260 kilometres away to the project's south east. The China Stone project site is within the western region of the Issac Regional Council municipal area where it adjoins the Charters Towers Regional Council municipal area to its west. The China Stone mining tenements cover an area of around 20,000 hectares that is currently being used for cattle grazing. Infrastructure at the project site is currently limited to small farming infrastructure that includes dams, stock fences and various unsealed vehicle tracks.

China Stone Mining to Include Both Open cut and Underground Operations

Mine surface infrastructure connected with the China Stone project, will take place in the eastern area of the project site. The coal seam will be worked by underground and open cut methods. Underground mining will incorporate up to four longwalls with the potential to include top-coal caving. Open cut mining will be carried out with the use of conventional truck, shovel and dragline method. The coal will be processed and washed on site with the finished coal product taken from the site by rail to the terminal at Abbot Point for export to China. The mine will initially be designed to produce up to 45 million tonnes of thermal coal a year with this tonnage increasing to peak at about 60 million tonnes a year. The life of mine is expected to last for 40 years at these production levels.

China Stone Infrastructure to be Built From Scratch

Infrastructure work at the China Stone coal mining project will include the building and operation of its own on-site power station that will be able to produce 800MW of electric power, an airstrip to bring workers to and from the mine and a mine workers accommodation village. Off site work will require the development of sufficient port capacity at Abbot Point, the construction of a railway to connect the port to the mine. Off site infrastructure work will not be included in the EIS currently being submitted.

It is planned for construction of the China Stone project to start in 2016 with coal from the open cut mine to begin being processed in the latter half of 2017. The first coal sale from the mine is expected to take place in 2018. Underground longwall coal mining will begin in 2018.

Established in 1999, Macmines Austasia Pty Ltd is focusing on geological exploration and mining business in Queensland. Shanxi Meijin Energy Group in China acquired 100% stakes of Macmines In July 2007 and became the sole shareholder of Macmines. The company's focus is the China Stone more
