About: The Cascade open cut coal mine is located on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island near the town of Denniston, north of Westport. The lease area covers 76 hectares of land with most of it on New Zealand Government Department of Conservation land.

Cascade Mine Produces Soft Coking Bituminous Coal
The Cascade mine, that is situated on the Buller coalfield, has been
producing bituminous, soft-coking coal for the New Zealand domestic market for nearly 100 years, with most of its sales going to a cement manufacturing plant at nearby Westport. The mine owner, Bathurst Resources Limited, is currently negotiating sales on the export market and has already sent one shipment of Cascade coal, via Port Taranaki, to an Asian customer and another shipment through the Port of Lyttleton to an Australian ferro silicon producer.

Cascade Mine to be Incorporated Into the Bathurst Buller Project
Bathurst Resources Limited acquired the Cascade open cut coal mine from Eastern Resources Group in 2010, it then became the first operational mine of the company's Bathurst Buller Project. This project is being developed on a land extension which adds a further coal resource that has been identified adjacent to the Cascade mining operation.

Cascade Mine to Export Coal for First Time
The Cascade mine produces around 100,000 tonnes of coal a year and is planning to increase this to 150,000 tonnes giving it an export capacity of between 50,000 and 75,000 tonnes a year. It is estimated the mine has a coal reserve of 1.5 million tonnes.

Bathurst Resources Limited, owns two other coal mines in New Zealand besides the Cascade mine that is located on the edge of the Denniston Plateau, these are the Malvern Hills (Coalgate) mine in Canterbury and the Takitimu mine in Southland. Both these mines produce sub-bituminous coal. The company also hold a number of prospecting and exploration permits.

Cascade Owner Bathurst Resources Becomes a New Zealand Company
Bathurst Resources began life as a purely Australian mining company that obtained New Zealand registration in late 2010, it redomiciled to New Zealand in 2013. In March, 2013, Bathurst Resources (New Zealand) Limited became incorporated and was registered with the New Zealand Companies Office. Its name was changed to Bathurst Resources Limited in December, 2013. The company is listed on both the New Zealand and Australian stock exchanges.

Bathurst Resources Limited has put together substantial plans to develop the extensive Bathurst Buller Project on the Denniston Plateau that will incorporate the Cascade mining operation, however, it has been held back from progressing this project on several occasions due to a long running battle with environmentalists who have been opposing the development.

A legal battle against opposition to establosh a new mine, the Escarpment coal mine, that is to be a major part of the Bathurst Buller Project, finally ended in November, 2013, with Bathurst Resources Limited immediately announcing the Escarpment mine would be ready to begin production in 2014. Persistant low world coking coal prices have slowed down progress on bringing the Escarpment mine up to full production therefore coal production at the mine will be curtailed until the price improves.

Bathurst Resources

The company completed its move from Australia and became a New Zealand company with its head office located in Wellington in June 2013. On July 1, 2013, the Company commenced trading shares under the code BRL on both the New Zealand and Australian stock exchanges.Bathurst has three operating more
