About: The giant Adani owned Carmichael mine, rail and port project in the north Galilee Basin region of Queensland is progressing well with the announcement that, Parsons Brinckerhoff, a US company, has been named as the project's management contractor. Parsons Brinckerhoff will provide Adani with assurance services relating to construction contracts, procurement and engineering matters over the coming months as the project moves from its approval stage into its construction phase.

Carmichael Mine to be Linked to Abbot Point Port by a 388 km Railway

The Carmichael mine, rail and port project includes the construction of the largest thermal coal mine in Australia, located 160 kilometres north west of the Central Queensland town of Clermont. The mine is to be linked by a 388 kilometre standard gauge railway leading to a new coal terminal to be constructed at the Abbot Point Port not far from Bowen. The total project is expected to employ more than 10,000 people either directly or indirectly as well as create supply opportunities for many businesses.

Carmichael to Have 60 Year Life of Mine

The infrastructure surrounding the Carmichael mine is anticipated to have more than a 60 year life span, a period that will no doubt assist in the development of other mines in the Galilee Basin area, therefore creating benefits for development be it local, regional as well as across the whole state of Queensland.

Carmichael Mine Rail and Port Project to Cost $16.5 Billion

The Carmichael mine, rail and port project, that is expected to cost Indian company Adani, $16.5 billion to construct, has also contracted South Korean company, Posco E and C, to build the 388 kilometre long railway from the mine to the port. Both contractors, Parsons Brinckerhoff and Posco E and C, have also been connected with the giant Western Australian Roy Hill mining project.

Project Centre of Considerable Controversy

The Carmichael mine, rail and port project has been the centre of considerable controversy because of the need to expand the port facility at Abbot Point to enable it to cater for the increased throughput the mining operation will create when in operation. The Abbot Point port is located near the Great Barrier Reef. However, Adani is confident the project will proceed and is planning on commencing construction during the first quarter of 2015. This will allow the first shipment to be made out of the expanded port by 2017.

Adani will export Carmichael mine thermal coal to India over future decades, much of it to supply Adani's own power stations. It expects India's demand for thermal coal to grow substantially during future years as the Indian government carries out improvement to its infrastructure in its support of private sector growth. The demand for electricity in India is expected to grow considerably by 2030.

The Galilee Basin in Queensland is considered by many to contain the final undeveloped coal resource to be exploited in the state, with the potential to become the largest coal producing region in Queensland. The North Galilee Basin Rail Project is important to this development as it will take the coal from the Galilee Basin to the expanded Abbot Point port on a new multi-user standard gauge line providing a shorter route to the coast compared to the existing narrow gauge line via Moranbah.

The Indian based Adani Group entered the coal mining industry in Australia in 2010 when it purchased the Abbot Point Port near Bowen and the Carmichael coal mine in the Galilee Basin. The company was founded in India in 1988.
