About: The Broula magnetite and limestone deposits are located 20 kilometres west of Cowra in Central New South Wales. The deposits were discovered in the early 1990's and has been the topic of several mineral exploration programs since that time. The Broula magnetite ore body was subjected to mining during World War Two but was closed during the late 1940's following the cessation of hostilities.

Somerset Mining Acquired Mining Lease Over the Broula Deposit in 2007

In June 2007 the Cowra Shire Council granted development approval to Somerset Mining for mining of the Broula magnetite and limestone deposits to once again take place. The New South Wales Department of Primary Industries granted Somerset Mining a mining lease over the Broula Deposit at the end of March, 2008. Unfortunately, the Global Financial Crisis took hold about the same time which prevented the venture proceding. The lease was acquired by Singapore based Abterra Australia Pty Ltd in August, 2011.

Abterra Recommence Mining of Broula Deposit in 2012

Abterra Australia appointed Broken Hill based company, Consolidated Mining and Civil (CMC), as its mining contractor to start mining the almost two million tonnes of iron ore at the Broula magnetite mine, on its behalf, in April, 2012. At this stage the Broula mine had an expected life of five years with a permanent workforce of 25 employees.

Broula Magnetite Ore Suitable as Direct Shipping Ore

Broula magnetite ore has been found to be suitable as a direct shipping ore that can be exported directly to steel and pellet makers. The ore is also able to be treated to create a magnetite concentrate that is able to be used in the preparation of coal. The Broula magnetite deposit is also situated adjacent to a body of limestone. There is a haematite (oxidised magnetite)deposit lying above the magnetite deposit.

Abterra Australia Pty Ltd mined and crushed both magnetite and haematite (non-magnetic iron ore) and limestone at its Broula mining operation. The resulting product was then transported directly to the company's customers or, alternatively, underwent further processing before being sold.

Consolidated Mining and Civil Given Contract to Operate Broula Mine

The agreement Abterra Australia Pty Ltd had with Consolidated Mining and Civil Pty Ltd to operate the Broula mine required CMC to drill, blast and haul the ore to the crusher and to drill, blast, excavate and haul waste material to a waste dump. The ore was crushed to process iron ore that was then loaded onto haulage trucks and taken to the market.

Consolidated Mining and Civil were also given the contract to construct all the necessary infrastructure which included the mine access road and the intersection, environmental controls and the necessary water storage dams.

The iron ore produced at the Broula mine was transported to either the Tallawang mine for processing into concentrate or directly to Port Kembla for direct shipping purposes after the mine reopened in 2012. It was capable of producing a monthly iron ore output of 25,000 tonnes.
