About:

The Australia Pacific LNG Project is a coal seam gas (CSG) to liquefied natural gas (LNG) project being undertaken in Queensland by Australia Pacific LNG, a joint venture company that comprises Origin Energy, ConocoPhillips and Sinopec. Sinopec is one of China's largest crude oil and natural gas companies, ConocoPhillips is a multinational energy producing company that has operations in more than 40 countries around the world. Origin Energy is the largest energy company operating in both New Zealand and Australia.

Australia Pacific LNG Project is a Joint Venture Partnership

Australia Pacific LNG is the largest coal seam gas reserve holder in Australia as well as being the country's largest methane gas producer. Sinopec joined Australia Pacific LNG in April 2011 as a part equity owner and foundation customer. ConocoPhillips is the partner carrying out the construction and operation of the project's facilities.

Australia Pacific LNG Project gas Conversion Plant on Curtis Island is Currently Under Construction

The plant to convert coal seam gas to LNG is presently under construction on Curtis Island near Gladstone in Queensland. This plant will receive the coal seam gas from the various gas fields operated by Australia Pacific LNG and cool it to a temperature of -161 degrees Celsius, at which temperature it becomes a liquid (LNG). This facilitates it being able to be transported by special tankers to the company's export customers in China and Japan.

The Australia Pacific LNG Project is Actually Three Projects Working Together

The Australia Pacific LNG Project comprises three distinct development phases, these being:

  • 1. The construction of the LNG plant on Curtis Island. This will initially consist of two gas production trains able to process up to nine million tonnes of gas a year.

  • 2. The construction of a 530 kilometre gas pipeline from the company's gas fields to the LNG plant on Curtis Island.

  • 3. The further development of Australia Pacific's LNG gas fields in the Bowen and Surat Basins in the central and south west regions of Queensland.

  • Much of Australia Pacific LNG Project gas is Pre-sold

The company has an agreement with its joint venture partner Sinopec to supply it with 7.6 million tonnes of LNG a year for the next 20 years and to supply Kansai Electric with one million tonnes of LNG a year for 20 years. The first export Train is expected to begin producing LNG in mid 2015, the second Train in late 2015. Once the project is completed it will require more than 1,000 permanent workers to keep it operational.

Australia Pacific LNG Project Camps Follow the gas Pipeline

During the construction of the gas pipeline for the Australia Pacific LNG Project, temporary accommodation is set up as close as possible to the work site to help eliminate as much travelling as possible. There is always two or three separate construction teams working on the 530 kilometre long pipeline at any one time. Wherever possible the accommodation sites are kept at least 100 kilometres apart to help reduce adverse impacts on local towns and roads. The temporary accommodation facilities include comfortable one person rooms with ensuites, modern dining rooms, communication facilities, recreational rooms, a medical centre and security. The sites also includes project offices, vehicle parking areas, storage rooms and workshops. The sites are also self sufficient with their own electricity generation plants, sewerage and waste disposal units.

    Australia Pacific LNG

Australian Pacific LNG is Australia's largest producer of coal seam gas, located in South East Queensland. The project contributes to 40 percent of Queensland's Gas requirements which is also expected to boost the Queensland Economy by $A2 billion annually. The project is set to supply another six...........read more
