Why Recruiters Don’t Call Back?

There’s good news and there’s bad news when it comes to the reasons a recruiter might not call you back.

It’s one of the most frustrating and often soul-crushing experiences for any job seeker. You put your heart and soul into a job application or interview and then you get nothing but silence back.

So what’s going on?

Well, the bad news is that if you haven’t heard back from a recruiter within a week, you probably didn’t get the job.

But the good news is it's not personal, and it does happen a lot. So in other words it’s not all about you!

Job and careers blogger Karalyn Brown believes the recruitment industry itself has certain rules and mechanisms that may in fact be the reason you don’t get that call back.

“Most recruitment agencies pay their consultants a hefty commission when they’ve placed you in a role. No surprises here. Most people know this,” Karalyn writes. “But what this means in practice is that if you are not a hot candidate about to sign on the dotted line from an interview the consultant has organised,  you will not be a priority, and most likely not contacted.

The other thing is to remember is that often agencies will not pay their consultants commission until they meet their targets.

So again, if you are not at some point in the line up to be placed in a role, then you are not a priority call. The consultant is focusing on what they need to do to meet their targets.

One of the positives you can derive out of not receiving a call back is a chance for you to review everything about your application and approach to your job search.

Think about your resume and see if it needs improving or reworking. Check your social media profiles such as LinkedIn to ensure they match your resume and are up to date. Think about doing some training or courses that may heighten your expertise and make you a more attractive candidate. Watch some video clips about best practice techniques in job interviews.

Recruitment expert Matt Tutty believes the hard work it takes to find a job will eventually pay off. “Whether you’re out of work or currently employed it’s not easy to find a new job,” He writes.

When it comes to finding a new position do your best with everything that’s under your control, like preventing resume typos, and try not to obsess about the rest, like if they already have a front-runner.

Remember you can’t lose a job you didn’t have in the first place.

In summary, remember that the reasons you didn’t get a call back from a recruiter may be more complicated than you think. Don’t take it personally, and turn it into a positive but revamping your approach to job hunt.
