  • The First and Most Important Page of Your Resume
  • Contact

It is not uncommon for an Employer/Recruiter to receive hundreds, sometimes even thousands of applications for an advertised position. This can make Resume screening a very overwhelming and time consuming task. As a result, most Employers/Recruiters will only spend approximately 15-30 seconds initially looking at your Resume. With such a small window of opportunity, the very first page of your Resume is considered the most important and must capture the reader’s attention immediately. In fact, many Employers/Recruiters admit that they only really pay attention to the top half of the first page. If they can’t see at a quick glance that the candidate is qualified, experienced or has the skill set they require, they won’t bother reading on.

Consequently, you must be strategic with what information you provide on the first page of your Resume. It must be informative, concise and highlight what the Employer/Recruiter is looking for. Taking the time to plan the layout and content of the first page will ensure you make a great first impression.

At the very top of the first page on your Resume (just under your Personal Details), you should clearly define to the reader who you are as a professional, by including a title. A title instantly demonstrates who you are and what the reader can expect to learn about you. For example, if you are a Boilermaker with 10 years experience in the Mining industry, your title may look something like this:

Qualified & Experienced Boilermaker • 10 Years Mining Experience • Safety & Quality Focused

You can see in this one sentence, the reader is provided with a wealth of information that entices them to read on and learn more about you. It is also a good place to incorporate keywords for scanning software purposes.

Professional Profile or Career Summary:

Providing a well-written Professional Profile or Career Summary is an excellent way to provide the reader with a snapshot of your Resume. It is also another great place on your Resume to include as many keywords as possible.

This section can either be written in paragraph format or as bullet points – there is no real rule here, as long as the information is relevant and targeted to the job you are applying for. Ensure it is not too long and as a rule of thumb, should not exceed 150-200 words or 10 bullet points.

Start your profile or summary by once again defining who you are as a professional, how many years experience you have and your relevant qualifications. Follow this by outlining your skills, competencies and/or abilities required for the position. Also include information relating to your soft skills such as communication, team work, time management, meeting deadlines etc.

Key Competencies:

Key competencies are a list of your main strengths, skills and/or abilities. Creating a key competencies section is another great place to saturate your Resume with keywords. Before writing this section, re-visit the job ad/application and highlight the relevant skills, experience, abilities, i.e. keywords, they are seeking. Then, as long as you do possess such competencies, include as many of these keywords in this section. For example, key competencies for a Boilermaker with 10 years Mining experience may include:

Servicing, Repairs & Maintenance; Welding & Fabrication Techniques; Diagnostic Skills; Interpreting Technical Drawings etc.

Ensure you have listed all RELEVANT qualifications, tickets and licences you have obtained on the first page of your Resume. There is no need to list any qualifications that are not related to the position you are applying for.
