Does Selection Criteria affect employment applications?

Selection criteria are the important elements or requirements of a role that employers consider when they are recruiting for a position. They are used to help employers select the most capable, suited and qualified applicant for the job. Selection criteria also helps organisations to standardise the recruitment process. They provide information to employees, recruiters and applicants on the essential and desirable requirements for the position they are filling.

A selection criteria consists of two parts which an employer may choose to use. These are the essential criteria and the desirable criteria. The essential criteria is the ‘must have’ criteria. In order to be seriously considered for the role, the applicant must meet all of the essential criteria. For instance, to get a rigging job in the mines, an applicant must have certain qualifications such as working at heights ticket, safety course qualifications and various other rigging certificates in order to qualify for the job. If that applicant does not have these essential qualification they will not be considered. The desirable criteria is the ‘nice to have’ criteria. This means it is not necessary for you to have the qualifications, skills and knowledge outlined in the desirable criteria in order for you to be considered for the job. However the desirable criteria is looked at when considering applicants. For example in the same rigging job, the desirable criteria may be at least 3 years’ experience in a similar job, however as it is not an essential criteria if you have less than 3 years you may still be considered for the role. As a jobseeker in such a competitive market you should aim to meet both the essential and desirable criteria.

Selection criteria can have a positive or negative affect on employment applications depending on how you answer it. Selection criteria is an opportunity for you to show your suitability to the role you are applying for, therefore you should ensure that you are demonstrating this suitability when writing your responses.

One of the most important things to be careful of when responding to a selection criteria is that you are answering it correctly. You must ensure you are addressing the criteria appropriately or else this can negatively affect your application. You are sending a clear message to the recruiter that you are incapable of the role if you are not able to read and respond to the selection criteria appropriately. Also, ensure you talk about relevant information when answering. If the criteria wants you to address your qualifications for the role, make sure you only address qualifications that show you are capable of the job.

When answered well, a selection criteria can have a beneficial effect on your employment application. It’s a chance for you to demonstrate you capabilities by providing evidence of how you meet the selection criteria, indicate success and competency to deal with certain situations and provide specific details to employers. This can positively affect your application as it allows you to sell yourself as a job seeker by setting yourself apart from other candidates and provide honest and well thought out responses to clearly communicate you meet the essential (and desirable) criteria for the role.
