How to effectively answer selection criteria

Selection criteria are the important elements or requirements of a role that employers consider when they’re recruiting for a position. Selection criteria is made up of two parts, the essential (must have) criteria and the desirable (nice to have) criteria. For best results as a jobseeker, you should aim to meet both criteria, especially in the mining industry. If you meet both criteria it can be a challenge to effectively answer them ensuring you show the recruiter that you are a viable candidate with all the necessary skills, knowledge and experience.

  • Read everything carefully
  • It is very important that you clearly understand the selection criteria and what it is asking for before you respond. If you don’t understand it do not simply respond and hope the recruiter won’t notice. You need to do a little research to ensure you answer the criteria appropriately otherwise you will be damaging your application
  • Brainstorm ideas for each criterion from your recent employment and provide evidence that demonstrates you meet the criteria. Even if your previous job was not in the mining industry you might identify some transferrable skills. By doing this it can help you to understand the selection criteria better and ensure you are addressing the criteria appropriately.
  • Answering the Selection Criteria

  • Be Specific - When answering a selection criteria it is important to be specific. Begin with an opening sentence that clearly states you are addressing that particular criteria and ensure you only address relevant situations, knowledge, skills or experience. For instance, if you are going for a certain position in the mining industry and it asks you to address your previous experience, only mention your experience within that particular role. Recruiters can see past roles and jobs in your resume, do not include them in the selection criteria.
  • Use the STAR method to show employers how your skills could be applied to their organisation and how you have behaved in past situations.

    • S - Situation : what was the situation? (brief outline)
    • T - Task : What were the main issues involved with the situation? What needed to be done?
    • A - Action : What were the steps you took to complete the task?
    • R - Result : What was the outcome? What lessons did you learn from this event?
  • Use different examples for each criteria, use the word “I” because the responses are about you and ensure you use full, concise sentences which give detailed examples for each criteria. Using strong action (doing) words, positive language and avoiding unsupported claims about your capabilities can also help you to answer the selection criteria effectively.

    • Review your responses for spelling and grammar mistakes
    • Ensure you have addressed all aspects of the criterion and are clear and to the point
    • Make sure your response is not lengthy and does not include any false claims.
