The importance of keeping your resume updated even when you have your dream job!

So you’ve scored your dream job, love working alongside great colleagues and enjoy high levels of job satisfaction. To top it all off, your boss or manager is fantastic to work for.

You can’t imagine any scenario into the future where you’d want to switch companies or need to apply for a new job. Why on earth would you need to keep your resume or CV updated when everything is going so well in your current role?

There are a few good reasons, in fact.

One of the big benefits of keeping your resume up to date comes from the very act of evaluating and re-evaluating your skills and experience. By putting it all down on paper and monitoring it regularly, you can take stock of your achievements and also identify potential gaps in your skill set. If you’re constantly learning new things at work, or completing courses and training, you can celebrate your wins and map out what types of skills you’d like to learn next.

Secondly, while you may be riding high in your dream job, you never know when an even better, dreamier job may come along. If that happens, you don’t want to spend hours going back through your recent experiences, training courses and skill capabilities to update your resume. That can lead to omissions and gaps in your resume or, worse still, spelling errors and typos due to the last minute rush. That last point is one of the biggest turn offs for recruiters and employers. By constantly refreshing and updating your resume, you’ll be one step ahead of the game and the competition if that golden opportunity arises.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you should keep your resume updated due to the simple and inevitable fact that you never know what’s around the corner. Life is unpredictable, and through no fault or intention of your own, there could be an unexpected need to look for a new job.

Whether it’s because your employer or company falls on tough times in a declining economy, or you need to move to a different city, it’s important to be prepared at all times to help make a transition if your circumstances unexpectedly change.

You might also be wondering how often you should update your resume. Well, it depends on what type of organiser you are. For some, it will be easy to update their resume the very instant a new skill, award or qualification happens. Others may need to set aside 30 minutes to an hour every fortnight to update their resume. Whatever approach you take, don’t forget the old saying from Charles Darwin: “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, not the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.”

We’re not quite sure Darwin was talking about the importance of updating your resume, but it’s good advice in this context nonetheless!
