Although they can provide some of the most fulfilling experiences in your lifetime, relationships are not always easy! One of the really common areas we see creating issues in relationships is centered around money. It is very common for two spouses to have different values about money, and this can easily lead to conflict.
The good news is that there are ways of overcoming this!
The big key is communication. In order to maximize the success of this communication, it is important that you and your partner understand each others triggers (as described in the PRINT newsletter and stage one of the Acorn Life Path). When you communicate with your partner, you will be able to identify where both of your values are causing differences in your financial goals.
The key to managing this conflict is to work together when setting your financial goals. It is very important that both of you are happy with the goals that you set together.
Of course, each of you will want to spend some money on different things, so in order for you to both be happy with your joint financial goals it is important to factor in some money for each of you to have control over. At Acorn we have a philosophy of “Living for Today While Planning for Tomorrow”. Although it is important to save money, it is also very important to set aside some money for your own enjoyment in the present.
With the rest of your money, it is powerful to identify the ways in which a Savings Plan™ will help you to achieve your goals. With your partner, write down as many reasons as you can why each of you will benefit from having money saved up. This will help to align your goals when making a financial plan.
So, if you and your partner are experiencing some conflict surrounding your finances, we encourage you to communicate about it, and try to formulate some financial goals together. Just remember make sure that each of you has your own personal money to do the things that you enjoy.
“Live for today while planning for tomorrow!”
