Writing An Effective Resume

Is your resume up to date and professional

If you have applied for numerous jobs with little or no response, it could be your Resume that is letting you down. Jobseekers continue to underestimate the power and importance of a Resume. Your Resume is your marketing tool that showcases who you are as a Professional, what qualifications, experience and skills you have, and why you should be hired. Your Resume, therefore, MUST be of the highest quality, well written and formatted, keyword rich and free of any grammatical or spelling errors.

Employers/Recruiters will only spend approximately 15-30 seconds (on average) initially looking at your Resume, before deciding if they want to read on. With such a small window of opportunity, you only have one chance to get it right. Furthermore, many medium to large size organisations are investing in Resume Screening software that are used to scan and filter Resumes before they even get looked at by a human. If your Resume is not formatted correctly and does not contain particular keywords, it will be ranked poorly and fail to be selected for further review.

We have selected 10 of the most important Resume Writing tips to ensure your Resume stands out and most importantly, passes through Resume Screening software.

  1. Keep it simple. Do not include any logos, graphics, intricate fonts or fancy borders/tables and avoid using colour.
  2. Formatting & Length. Use .doc or .rtf formats, not .pdf and keep your Resume to no more than 3 pages in length. Do not provide employment experience more than 10-15 years old.
  3. Keywords. Your Resume must be tailored specifically to the position you are applying for with specific keywords used in context throughout the document.
  4. Contact information. Avoid putting your contact information in headers or footers. There is no need for personal pictures or your date of birth.
  5. Career Summary or Professional Profile. Provide a Career Summary or Professional Profile that highlights your strengths and experience on the top of the 1st page. This is a good place to add keywords relevant to the position.
  6. Qualifications, Tickets & Licences. Clearly list your qualifications, tickets and/or licenses on the 1st page. If you have completed a Certificate/Diploma/Tertiary degree, list the date this was completed, the name of the course and the institute/training organisation where you studied.
  7. Employment Experience. Ensure you list dates, employer name and position title for each place you have worked, in reverse chronological order. Be specific with your duties/responsibilities. For example, explain what mines/projects you have worked at and if you operate plant/machinery/vehicles, list the make/models.
  8. Achievements. List at least 2-3 key achievements for each position. This will demonstrate your initiative and allow you to stand out from other applicants.
  9. Referees. Only list referees that you are sure will provide positive feedback. These should be people that you reported to ie Managers/Supervisors.
  10. Proofread. Ensure your Resume is free of any spelling or grammatical errors. Have a friend or family member look at your Resume before submitting it.
